DeepL is an online service for machine translation and a company based in Cologne (DE). The translation programme has been trained with neural networks and, unlike conventional online lexicons, delivers translations for entire texts or text passages in one click. There are currently 33 languages to choose from.
DeepL can be used in the browser or in an app. In the browser, the text to be translated is copied into the free field. After selecting the target language, the translation appears immediately. By clicking in the source or target language text, the corresponding passage in both texts is highlighted so that a direct comparison is possible. In the target language, clicking on a word suggests alternative translations and displays a dictionary entry for the term.
Without registration, up to 1,500 characters per day can be translated with DeepL. With a free account, you can translate up to 5,000 characters per day and three entire documents (e.g. .docx, .pdf, .ppt) per month. These are stored via drag-and-drop and the translation is downloaded directly. ZHdK employees who urgently need this for their work can apply for a paid DeepL Pro account via the ITZ.
Please note: no machine translation is perfect - before publishing an automatically translated text, it should always be proofread by a native speaker!
